COINTELPRO (an acronym for Counter Intelligence Program) was a series of covert, and often illegal, projects conducted by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) aimed at spying on, infiltrating, discrediting, disrupting and destroying domestic organizations considered "subversive". According to the FBI, "intensified attention under this program should be afforded to the activities of groups such as the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Revolutionary Action Movement, the Deacons for Defense and Justice, Congress of Racial Equality, and the Nation of Islam".

Below are the files from the FBI's COINTELPRO dossier on Malcolm X. The documents were filed in the order they were received from the FBI and are in approximate chronological order (though the FBI did not index documents).  While these files have been released under the Freedom of Information Act, "certain documents or portions of documents have been deleted by the FBI pursuant to provisions of that legislation". An introduction to the print guide of the collection and other documents of this collection may also be accessed (in PDF format) at: http://foia.fbi.gov/foiaindex/malcolmx.htm
