Celebrate Black Heritage Month with Us!

Updated: Feb 16, 2023

Inspired by the Timeless Words of Brother Malcolm

We are inspired by the words of Brother Malcolm constantly and his autobiography is the best introduction we could offer anyone who is willing to read and grow from his personal experiences. Currently we offer free copies of The Autobiography of Malcolm X to the community in a number of ways. This month, we are encouraging the public to help us in this effort by donating a minimum of $8 per book which would be used directly towards the purchase of books through our beloved locally Black-owned bookstore (Af

ramerican Bookstore). Last year we were able to distribute 1,200 books! However, that number only got us through half a year of service to the community. Let’s see if we can double that this year! See the options below on how to contribute to this month-long book drive.

Donate immediately online here. Or you can mail checks and new books to us directly at: Malcolm X Memorial Foundation 3448 Evans Street Omaha, Nebraska 68111

We are happy to report on the progress being made internally during our first year with an executive director. Much of the focus had been on initiating structural processes for the longevity of the organization. We've streamlined the visitor experience and built relationships with other local cultural institutions to include Opera Omaha & the Durham Museum. We successfully revamped the internal communications system between staff and board members through the use of a new email system and website updates. Additionally, we concluded the creation of necessary policies and updating the by-laws to reflect this new organizational structure. In addition we've had some notable wins and programmatic success & Operational Wins in 2022 to include:

  • Successful supporting efforts to get Malcolm X inducted into the Nebraska Hall of Fame! This initiates a state funded artist installation with a call for Artist proposals to be announced in February. Thank you again to those who helped testify and advocate for this!

  • Hosted 7 special events at the memorial birthsite

  • Gave away 1,200 copies of The Autobiography of Malcolm X to the community through vendor booths, tours, educational workshops, prison outreach and special events.

  • 25 consistent and awesome volunteers

  • 4200 visitors through tours, rentals & special events.

  • Secured $70,000 in statewide funds from Americorps Vista to build a volunteer program and further impact our capacity and growth

  • Awarded grant & participation in the Lobby School program through the Nebraska Civic Engagement Table and the Omaha Community Foundation Capacity Building Leadership Program
