CIVIC ENGAGEMENT UPDATES

Last Year we initiated our Public Policy Fellowship and more Civic Engagement efforts. See a few updates below on our recent success and community wins!

LB1102 Passes - Recognition of May 19th as Malcolm X Day!

Our dedicated Policy Fellow, Schmeeka Simpson successfully amended state recognition of Malcolm X’s birthday into LB1102. In collaboration with Senator Terrell McKinney, this amendment was passed as a formal Day of Recognition allowing educators statewide to recognize Bro. Malcolm’s contribution to American History in a meaningful way. Moving forward, this will allow for more plausible outreach efforts to build awareness around the creation of a formally recognized State Holiday.

LB20 Passes - Restoration of Voting Rights for Felons

Last fall the petition began to introduce LB20 - A Bill to Provide for restoration of voting rights upon completion of a felony sentence or probation for a felony. To read the full journal entry and history of this bill being signed into law, visit the Nebraska Unicameral documentation linked here

“We are thrilled to write that LB20 was passed into law on Thursday, April 18th. This will restore the right to vote for thousands of Nebraskans who were impacted by the arbitrary two-year waiting period. Starting on July 18th, any Nebraskan who has completed a felony sentence will be able to register to vote immediately after they are ‘off paper’, having completed any probation or parole. This is the culmination of years of organizing and activism.” - Shared by our partners from Nebraska Civic Engagement Table.
